LIFETIME FILTERS

You take pride in your home. You vacuum the floor, you dust the furniture, you wash the fingerprints off the walls. So where did that ugly black film around the supply air registers come from? In a new home it is usually a sign of extreme filter neglect (you know, no filter). In an older home it can be a sign of dirty air ducts caused by using an inefficient air filter. At any rate it is dirt, smoke, pollen, and dust that was not caught by the filter. You can wash it off but it will come back?

How Do Electrostatic Air Filters Work?

These washable furnace filters work by having multiple layers of vented metal which the air passes through. As the air passes through the first layer of filtration, the air molecules are positively charged by the friction between the air and the filter. The now positively charged air molecules attach themselves to the next few layers as they pass through the rest of the filter. Think about it as working kind of like walking across the carpet with your socks on and then touching a door knob – the process of walking across the carpet charges you with static electricity which is then released when you touch a grounded surface like a door knob. Only instead of your socks scooting across a carpet, it is the air scooting across your air filter that creates a charge and traps dust particles in the air filter.

Electrostatic Air Filters

Electrostatic air filtration is a permanent, cost-effective way to significantly improve the quality of the indoor air. We have been designing and manufacturing washable electrostatic air filters since 1957 because of the media’s effectiveness and durability. The electrostatic filter fabric’s inherent electrostatic charge enhances filtration by drawing particulates onto fiber surfaces like iron fillings onto a magnet. Static electricity, being static, does not flow like electrical current, and therefore does not discharge over time or require either grounding or insulation. This type of air filter is washed monthly – no disposable parts, system modifications or electrical hookups.

What is an Electrostatic Air Filter and How Does It Work?

Electrostatic air filters are washable air filters that theoretically never need to be replaced. I say ‘theoretically’ because the idea that something that is subjected to dirt and debris regularly will also work indefinitely, seems too good to be true.

The idea is that instead of replacing your electrostatic air filter at regular intervals like you would a conventional air filter, you take them out back and wash them off with a hose about once a month. This is a handy trick if you are sick of spending money on conventional air filters.

How to Clean Washable Air Conditioner Filters?

When it comes to cleaning air filters, thoroughness is key. In terms of maintenance, you need to clean washable filters once every month, neglecting this can cause restriction of airflow as dirt keeps building up within the filter. Proper cleaning of reusable air filters is important to maintain critical airflow and prolong the life of the AC unit. When you inspect your AC filter and see dust on the surface of the filter, it’s time to clean it up.

First, you need to safely get the filter out of the AC unit. Rinse it in a sink or tub with water. You can use a gentle brush and mild detergent to wash off sticky particles. Once that’s done, shake the excess water so it drains out of the drain holes in the frame, and reinstall the air filter back into the system. The airflow from the system will dry the clean filter completely.

Key Takeaways
Washable air conditioner filters are very easy to clean and maintain. Unlike disposable filters, you can simply take them out of your HVAC unit, rinse them with water, and they’re good to go again. Maintaining a clean and functional AC filter is one of the keys to keeping any commercial building safe from dirty air.

Heat Pumps
Heat pumps heat and cool differently than furnaces and central air conditioners, so homeowners lacking experience with them may not understand how they work. Likewise, inexperienced homeowners may have some confusion distinguishing normal operation from actual heat pump issues.
